自制とは？
a) 1903年9月、イーデン河岸五番地、仕立及び装身具商、ジョージ・メサイアスの店舗に於ける知己の開始、b)同種的に提供、受領され、人的に返礼、再充当された歓待、c)野心及び雅量の衝動、同輩的利他主義、多情的利己主義に服する相対的な若さ、d) 外民族的吸引、内民族的抑制、超民族的特権、並びに、e)通貨的出費の共有、総収益の分配による差し迫った郊外へ音楽公演旅行の故。
問答の形式で書かれた第17章。衒学的な文体が用いられている。
寝床のブルーム氏は妻の愛人ボイランのことを考えている。
彼の考察には羨望、嫉妬、自制、平静の入り混じる。ここはその３つめの自制とは何かという問いとその答え。法律的な文体が援用されているようだ。第17章では対句が支配的。

ジョージ・メサイアスへは、U90, U229, U388, U406に言及があり、すでにボイランとブルーム氏の共通の仕立屋であることが示されていた。
彼は実在の人物だが、Eden（エデン）に住まうMesias（救世主）であることをジョイスは面白がったに違ない。
モリ―とボイランが合う前の1903年にブルーㇺ氏とボイランが知り会っていたことをわれわれは、小説も終わりに近い、こんなところで初めて知らされる。
