From Butler’s monument house corner he glanced along Bachelor’s walk. Dedalus’ daughter there still outside Dillon’s auctionrooms. Must be selling off some old furniture. Knew her eyes at once from the father. Lobbing about waiting for him. Home always breaks up when the mother goes. Fifteen children he had. Birth every year almost. That’s in their theology or the priest won’t give the poor woman the confession, the absolution. Increase and multiply. Did you ever hear such an idea?
バトラーのモニュメントハウスの角からバチェラーズウオークのほうへ目をやった。デッダラスの娘がディロンの競売場の前にまだいる。古い家具でも売りに来ているに違いない。目が父親似だからすぐ分かる。父親を待ってぶらついている。家ってものは母親がいなくなると瓦解する。15人子供をつくった。ほとんど毎年生まれていたわけだ。それが彼らの神学。産まないと司祭は哀れな女に告解と赦罪を与えてくれない。生めよ増やせよ。こういうの聞いたことあるかい。
第8章。前回のブログの少し前の場面。ブルーム氏は新聞社を出てサックヴィㇽ通りを南下しているところ。地図の星印のあたりにいる。サックヴィㇽ通りとバチェラーズウオークの角にあるのが楽器メーカー、バトラー家のモニュメントハウス（円で囲った所）。バチェラーズウオークには、ディロンの競売場（楕円で囲った建物）がある。
ブルーム氏が「デッダラスの娘がディロンの競売場の前にまだ（still）いる。」といっているのは、さっき、新聞社から広告の仕事の件で一度ディロンに行ったからで、そのときにサイモン・デッダラスの娘、ディリーを見かけたのだろう。ジョイスのこういう細かいところを整合する書き方には驚嘆する。
—I’m just running round to Bachelor’s walk, Mr Bloom said, about this ad of Keyes’s. Want to fix it up. They tell me he’s round there in Dillon’s. （U106.430）
なぜサイモン（小説の主人公スティーヴンの父でもある）は競売場にいるのか。デッダラス家は子だくさんのうえサイモンは零落し貧乏である。おまけに妻が昨年病気で亡くなった。そのため家財を競売に出して金策しているのだ。と、ブルーム氏は思ったのだ。
小説中の情報では、デッダラス家には、スティーヴンを長男とし、その弟（U173.977）とディリー、ケイティ、ブーティー、マギー（第10章の第4、第11、第13断章）という妹がいる。15人子供がいたのかはわからない。
ブルーム氏は、ディリーの目が父親似であるという。ブログの第30回でふれたとおり、この小説には「父と子が同一実体である」というテーマがあるが、その変奏で「親と子の目または声がそっくり」というテーマがある。
①スティーヴンは、自分と父は、声と目が同じと思う。
Wombed in sin darkness I was too, made not begotten. By them, the man with my voice and my eyes and a ghostwoman with ashes on her breath.（U32.45）
②パリにて、亡命者ケヴィン・イーガンは、留学中のスティーヴンの声が父に似ているという。
You’re your father’s son. I know the voice.（U36.230）
③新聞社から酒場へむかうところで、編集長クロウフォードが、スティーヴンは父親にそっくりという（chip of the old block）。
—Lay on, Macduff!
—Chip of the old block! the editor cried, clapping Stephen on the shoulder. Let us go.（U118.900）
④図書館の場面、スティーヴンは、シェイクスピアの娘のスーザンが父にそっくりだった（chip of the old block）という。
It repeats itself again when he is near the grave, when his married daughter Susan, chip of the old block, is accused of adultery.（U174.1005）
⑤ベッドフォード小路の古本屋で、スティーヴンは、妹のディリーと自分は同じ目をしていると人にいわれたことを想起する。
—I bought it from the other cart for a penny, Dilly said, laughing nervously. Is it any good?
My eyes they say she has. Do others see me so? Quick, far and daring. Shadow of my mind.（U200.866-）
さて、本文にもどって。
“lobbing about” の lob の意味がわからない。
普通は「（ボールを）弧を描くよう投げる」との意味。辞書によると “to move slowly and heavily” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary) との意味もあり、とりあえず「ぶらつく」とする。
“absolution”は、赦免、赦罪。カトリックでは，司祭以上の聖職だけがもつ権能で，罪を痛悔した者のために，罪とその罰のゆるしをキリストに代って告知する行為とのこと。
“Increase and multiply” は、旧約聖書の創世記（9.1）をふまえている。
「神ノアと其の子等を祝して之に曰ひたまひけるは生めよ増殖よ地に滿てよ。」
“And God blessed Noe and his sons. And he said to them: Increase and multiply, and fill the earth.”
ブルーム氏はとかく宗教的なことに反感をもっているようだ。
