第17章。この章は初めから終わりまで、質問と答えの形で書かれている。夜中の２時過ぎ、ブルーム氏はスティーヴンを自宅につれて帰り、台所でスティーヴンのためにココアを入れようと水道の蛇口をひねった。ブルーム氏の「水」の特性に対する認識が問われ、43項目にわたって延々と述べられる。その最後の4つを切り取った。即ち、①潜在力、②動物相と植物相、③遍在性、④有毒性。
故意に難解な単語が使われているので、漢語を援用して訳した。
“the waning moon”というのは、満月から徐々に欠けていって新月にいたる月のこと。その逆は”the waxing moon”。

なぜ月が出てくるか。ここの意味がわからない。ギフォードの注釈によると欠けゆく月は地球の衰退を象徴するという。月の影響で湖沼の水が腐敗するということか。突飛な感じがするが、ブログの第60回で言及したように、17章は天体への言及が多いので、なるほどと思う。
このしばらく後に、月と女の類似性が言及されている。

唐突にさしはさまれる、「花水」 “flowerwater” とは何か?
花びらを水蒸気蒸留した香水という。
第4章。ブルーム氏は妻のモリーに古くなった花水のにおいを感じている。
