THE LOITERERS: (Guffaw with cleft palates.) O jays!
(Their paintspeckled hats wag. Spattered with size and lime of their lodges they frisk limblessly about him.)
BLOOM: Coincidence too. They think it funny. Anything but that. Broad daylight. Trying to walk. Lucky no woman.
THE LOITERERS: Jays, that’s a good one. Glauber salts. O jays, into the men’s porter.
(Bloom passes. Cheap whores, singly, coupled, shawled, dishevelled, call from lanes, doors, corners.)
THE WHORES:

親方:（しゃがんで、くぐもった鼻声で）ケアンズがビーヴァー通りの足場から降りてきてよ中にやったんだ、まったく、黒ビールのバケツの中へ、後のお楽しみにダーワンとこの左官屋が鉋屑の上に置いてたんだな。
浮浪者たち：（裂けた口蓋で大笑い）がはは、なんてこった。
（ペンキ班点の帽子を振り振り、小屋の膠と灰の撥ねまみれ、親方の周りで無肢雀躍。）
ブルーム：また偶然の一致。みんなこんな話が好き。ご免被るよ。昼日なか。歩きだしたとき。女がいなくてよかった。
浮浪者たち：おもしれ―。なんと黒ビールの中へ下剤。
（ブルームはやり過ごす。安淫売、独りの、客連れの、ショールを羽織ったの、だらしないの、路地から、戸口から、街角から、声をかける。）
娼婦たち：
どこへおでかけキモイおじさん
真ん中の足の具合はどう
お相手は見つかったかい
寄ってってよ固くしてあげる。
第15章。ブルーム氏が娼館街へやってきたところ。ブログの第25回の直前の箇所。ブルーム氏は工事の親方と浮浪者たちのたむろするあたりをを通り過ぎる。
ブルーム氏は今マボット通りとメクレンバーク通りの角あたりの地獄門 “hellsgates” にいる（地図の星★印）。彼はこれからベラコーエンの娼館（ダイヤ♦印）へ向かう。ビーヴァー通り（楕円で囲った通り）は、今ブルーム氏のいる所から遠くない。ちょうど前回のブログで触れた、スティーヴンが英国兵にからまれることになるのはちょうどこのビーヴァー通りの足場にある所である。

親方は職人のケアンズが、左官のバケツのビールに小便をした話をしている。第51回で見たように、ブルーム氏は今日、いくつもの偶然の一致 "coincidence" に遭遇する。ここはそのひとつ。集英社版の注釈によると、第13章で彼が思い出していることに関係するという。ブルーム氏はバーニーキアナンの酒場からディグナムの家を再訪しているがその際、立小便をしたようである。これが正解なのかはっきりわからないが、自分では他の可能性を発見できない。

“Jays” は、辞書を調べてもわからない。ギフォードの注釈によると、Jesus の意とのこと。
“Glauber salts” は硫酸ナトリウム。下剤として用いられる。ドイツ-オランダの薬剤師で化学者、ヨハン・ルドルフ・グラウバー（Johann Rudolf Glauber、1604年? - 1670年）が硫酸ナトリウムを発見したため、これを「グラウバー塩」とも呼ぶということ。
娼婦の小唄の “Got a match on you?" の "match" は「相手」だろう。集英社版も昭和7年の岩波文庫も「マッチ」と訳しているけれど。
さて、バケツはこの後にもしつこく登場する。
幻想の裁判場面で、ブルーム氏は尋問を受ける。彼はビーヴァー通りのバケツに排便した嫌疑をうける。

先ほど触れた、スティーヴンが英国兵といさかいになる場面で、英国王エドワード7世があらわれる。（ここも幻想場面）王はフリーメイソンのローブをまとい鏝と左官のバケツを持っている。バケツにはフランス語で小便禁止とプリントがしてある。
(Edward the Seventh appears in an archway. ・・・ He is robed as a grand elect perfect and sublime mason with trowel and apron, marked made in Germany. In his left hand he holds a plasterer’s bucket on which is printed Défense d’uriner. A roar of welcome greets him.)
EDWARD THE SEVENTH: (Slowly, solemnly but indistinctly.) Peace, perfect peace. For identification, bucket in my hand. Cheerio, boys. ・・・

事実、王はフリーメイソンだった。フリーメーソンは、元来、左官、石工、大工の組合であったので鏝はフリーメイソンのシンボル。今回の一節に「膠と灰」”size and lime”（セメントの材料）、ロッジ ”lodges” といったフリーメイソン関連のことばが出てくるのはこのつながりなのか。しかしなぜこの場所でこのテーマを連関させているのか謎だ。
