—I pinched it out of the skivvy’s room, Buck Mulligan said. It does her all right. The aunt always keeps plainlooking servants for Malachi. Lead him not into temptation. And her name is Ursula.

スティーヴンは身を乗り出し差し出された鏡をのぞき込んだ、湾曲した割れ目の入った鏡。逆立った髪。あいつや他人にはこう見えている。なんでこの顔なんだ。犬の蚤取り屋みたいな。こいつも僕に訊いている。
―女中部屋からくすねてきたんだ、とバック・マリガン。別にかまわない。うちのおばさんはマラカイにはいつも地味目な召使を雇うんでね。彼を試みに遭わし給うなかれ。で、名前はアーシュラだって。
第1章。小説冒頭場面。朝8時。主人公のスティーヴンは友人のマラカイ・マリガンとマーテロ―塔に同居している。マリガンが髭剃りに用に使った鏡をスティーヴンに差し出したところ。

ひびの入った召使の鏡 The cracked lookingglass of a servant というのはこの章の少し後にまた出てくる。スティーヴンはマリガンに「ひびの入った召使の鏡」はアイルランド文学の象徴だという。英国の召使であるアイルランドの不具合な鏡では正しく現実を写せないということ。
—Cracked lookingglass of a servant! Tell that to the oxy chap downstairs and touch him for a guinea. He’s stinking with money and thinks you’re not a gentleman.

鏡ということでブログの59回の所を思い出す アヴェロエスとマイモニデスのかかげるmocking mirror (あ、looking glassと掛けていたのか！) は湾曲した鏡ではないかと考えた。平らな鏡には世界の一部分しか写らないけれど、ひび割れた鏡やゆがんだ鏡には、もっと広い世界が反射する。ジョイスはひび割れた鏡を使って世界を写し取ろうとした。深層の意味として、「ひびの入った召使の鏡」とは、彼の小説のことではないか。
dogsbody は人のやりたがらない仕事をする下働きとの意味。
少し前に、マリガンがスティーヴンのことをそう呼んだので、スティーヴンの頭にこの言葉が浮かんだ。
Buck Mulligan wiped again his razorblade.
―Ah, poor dogsbody! he said in a kind voice. I must give you a shirt and a few noserags. How are the secondhand breeks?

犬は第3章で活躍する。サンディマウントの海岸でスティーヴンは犬の死骸を見つける。dogsbodyはここでまた想起される。
The carcass lay on his path. He stopped, sniffed, stalked round it, brother, nosing closer, went round it, sniffling rapidly like a dog all over the dead dog’s bedraggled fell. Dogskull, dogsniff, eyes on the ground, moves to one great goal. Ah, poor dogsbody! Here lies poor dogsbody’s body.

rid of vermin は、害虫か害獣の駆除。
江戸時代に、お客の飼い猫の蚤を取って日銭を稼ぐ「猫の蚤とり」という仕事があったとかで、「蚤取り屋」と訳した。
“Lead him not into temptation.” はマタイ伝第6章第13節のもじり。
“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:”
「我らを嘗試（こゝろみ）に遭せず、惡より救ひ出したまへ」
女中の名の Ursula アーシュラというのは、聖ウルスラ（? - 383年?）にちなむ。ブリタニア出身の伝説上のキリスト教の聖女。才色兼備と純潔で知られる。マリガンはその名前をからかっている。
