第15章。娼婦の館にて。ブログの第91回のところの後の場面。ブルーム氏の落書きをきっかけに、出現した馬車からブルーム氏の妻の愛人であるボイランが現れる。
ブルーム氏は召使に変身し、ボイランとモリーの浮気を覗き見させてもらおうとしている場面。ブルーム氏の自虐的深層心理が幻想になって表れているのだろう。
ヴァセリン（Vaseline）は、ユニリーバ社が販売する保湿剤、クリームのブランド名。
オレンジフラワー…はオレンジフラワーウォーター。ブログの66回でふれたように、ブルーム氏が今日モリーのために薬屋で注文したが、取りにいかなかった化粧水。
第15章は現実と幻想が混在していて、キティ、フロリー、ゾーイはブルームと同じ部屋にいる娼婦だが、彼女らは幻想ではない。91回のところでふれたように、ブルーム氏はゾーイに手相をみてもらっており、彼女らがささやきあっているのは、その手相についてだと思う。
フロリーのさささやきは突然音楽的で特殊な造語で描写されるのだがなぜなのか分からない。
“liplap”は ”lip” 「唇」と、”lap” 「ぴちゃぴちゃなめる」の合成だろう。
“poppysmic”はラテン語の "poppysma" に由来することばで、唇や舌で立てる音とのこと。
“Poppysmic refers to the noise produced by smacking the lips together.”
“plopslop” は”plop”「ドブンと音がする」と”slop”「こぼす」の合成。
この場面の直前で、モリーが風呂からドブンとしぶきを上げて出てくるのだが、その場面と響き合っている。
MARION: He ought to feel himself highly honoured. (She plops splashing out of the water.) Raoul darling, come and dry me. I’m in my pelt. Only my new hat and a carriage sponge.

ブルーム氏が呼んで来ようと言っている友達とは、彼の少年時代の友人パーシー・アプジョン（Percy Apjohn）に違いない。17章に、彼がスナップ写真を撮るとの記述がある。

この時代（1904年）にスナップショット写真機などあったのだろうか。
検索してみると、スナップショットの写真機が普及したのはイーストマン・コダック社の「ブローニー」”Brownie”というカメラによるという。1900年、ブローニーNo1が発売されている。価格は１ドルで１年で10万個売れたという。翌年にはブローニーNo2を発売。価格は２ドル。英国では５シリング。小説の現在1904年の5シリングは現在の価値では19ポンド相当で約3200円。これなら子供が持っていてもおかしくない。

しかし、これもやはり17章で分かるのだが、アプジョンはボーア戦争に従軍し、おそらく1899年にモダー川 ”Modder River” の戦闘ですでに死亡している。
