ブルーム氏はオーモンド・ホテルのレストランで食事している。サイモンの歌とブルーム氏の思考。
スティーヴンの父親サイモンがドイツの作曲家フリードリッヒ・フォン・フロトーのオペラ『マルタ』"Martha"（1847年）から「マッパリ」"M'appari" を歌っている。
「マッパリ」とはこの歌のイタリア語訳からとられたタイトル。アン女王の女官ハリエットと侍女のナンシーは田舎娘マルタとユリアに変装し,農場の奉公人となる。農場主の弟ライオネルはマルタに惹かれて、結婚を申し込むが、マルタは宮廷にこっそリ連れもどされる。ライオネルがマルタのことを忘れられず歌う。
サイモンはチャールズ・ジェフリーズの英訳の歌詞を歌っている。
come to me! は歌詞の一番最後の部分。
ライオネルはマルタに帰って来いと歌う
サイモンは、亡くなった妻のことを思っているのではないか。
そしてブルーム氏は、ボイランのもとにいる、妻のモリ―のことを思っている。
サイモンとブルーム氏は合一して、Siopoldとなる。これはブログの30回でかんがえたことをふまえるとよくわかる。主人公のスティーヴンの実の父であるサイモンと、小説論上の父であるレオポルドが合一しているのだ。キリストの父であるヨゼフと神の合一。
to her とは誰なのか。オペラの中のマルタだろうか、ブルーム氏の文通相手のマーサ Martha だろうか。
