Martin Cunningham nudged Mr Power.

A tall blackbearded figure, bent on a stick, stumping round the corner of Elvery’s Elephant house, showed them a curved hand open on his spine.
一行は外套をまとった解放者の巨像の足下を通り過ぎた。
マーティン・カニンガムがパワー氏をつついた。
―あそこにルベンの末裔が。
背の高い黒ひげの人物が杖にすがってとぼとぼと、エルヴァリーのエレファントハウスの角を曲がった。指を曲げた手を背に、掌をこちらへ向けて。
第6章。午前11時ごろ。ブルーム氏は友人のディグナム氏の葬儀に参列するため、ダブリンの南東に位置するディグナム家から、馬車で市の北西のはずれ、グラスネヴィン墓地まで街を縦断しているところ。馬車には、スティーヴンの父サイモン・デッダラス、警察隊に勤務するジャック・パワー、アイルランド総督政庁に勤務するマーティン・カニンガム、そしてブルーム氏の4人が乗っている。
この箇所はブログの35回の直前のところ。ここのことはそこですでにふれた。
「解放者」とは、アイルランド解放運動の指導者ダニエル・オコンネル（Daniel O'Connell 1775 - 1847）英国下院議員としてカトリック解放令を成立させるなど、議会を通じてアイルランド独立の達成に努めた。銅像の立つダブリンの目抜き通りは小説の当時（1904年）サックヴィル通りといったが、現在はオコンネル通りと呼ばれる。
さて、カニンガムがパワーを “nudge” する、というのがどういう意味なのか、に突き当たった。
ブログの35回と49回で、「4人は向かい合って座っており。進行方向にむかって、左前方に後ろ向きにサイモン、その隣にパワー氏、その向かいに前向きにカニンガム氏、その隣にブルーム氏が座っていると考えられる。」と書いた。つまり下の図の通り。
これで正しいのか。見直してみなければならなくなった。
では、まず前提情報として。
- 馬車は4人乗り。
- ２人は後ろ向きに、２人は前向きに向かい合って座る。
- 馬車の扉は両側に一つずつあり、蝶番は後ろ側に、取手は前にある。（下図参照）
- 道路は左側通行。
- 第６章はおもにブルーム氏の視点で語られている

①馬車にはカニンガム、パワー、サイモン・デッダラス、ブルームの順に乗る。
４人は左から入ったのか右から入ったのかわからない。しかしはじめに乗る人は奥に座るのが普通なので、カニンガムとブルーム氏は真正面で向かい合っていない。パワーとサイモンも同じ。
Martin Cunningham, first, poked his silkhatted head into the creaking carriage and, entering deftly, seated himself. Mr Power stepped in after him, curving his height with care.
—Come on, Simon.
—After you, Mr Bloom said.

②ブルームはウォータリー小路を歩くスティーヴン（サイモンの息子）を見つけている。ウォータリー小路は進行方向の左なので、ブルーム氏は左側に座っている可能性が高い。サイモンが stretching over across するので、右側にいるように思われる。
The carriage swerved from the tramtrack to the smoother road past Watery lane. Mr Bloom at gaze saw a lithe young man, clad in mourning, a wide hat.
—There’s a friend of yours gone by, Dedalus, he said.
—Who is that?
—Your son and heir.
—Where is he? Mr Dedalus said, stretching over across.

③ブルームは、怒ったサイモンの髭から、パワーの顔、カニンガムの目と鬚へ視線を移している。この順で並んでいる可能性が高い。
He ceased. Mr Bloom glanced from his angry moustache to Mr Power’s mild face and Martin Cunningham’s eyes and beard, gravely shaking.

④公立高校、ミード、客待場（hazard）、これらは進行方向の左側にある。馬車の客待場の描写が詳しいのでブルーム氏は左側にいる可能が高い。
National school. Meade’s yard. The hazard. Only two there now. Nodding. Full as a tick. Too much bone in their skulls. The other trotting round with a fare. An hour ago I was passing there. The jarvies raised their hats.

クイーン座も左にある。ポスターの描写が詳しく、ブルーム氏は左側の可能性が高い。
They went past the bleak pulpit of saint Mark’s, under the railway bridge, past the Queen’s theatre: in silence. Hoardings: Eugene Stratton, Mrs Bandmann Palmer. Could I go to see Leah tonight, I wonder. I said I. Or the Lily of Killarney? Elster Grimes Opera Company. Big powerful change. Wet bright bills for next week. Fun on the Bristol.

⑤カニンガムが、レッドバンク亭（進行方向右側）の前にいるボイランに気が付く。カニンガムは右側にいる可能性が高い。サイモンがbent acrossして挨拶するので、サイモンは左側にいるようだ。
—How do you do? Martin Cunningham said, raising his palm to his brow in salute.
—He doesn’t see us, Mr Power said. Yes, he does. How do you do?
—Who? Mr Dedalus asked.
—Blazes Boylan, Mr Power said. There he is airing his quiff.
…
Mr Dedalus bent across to salute. From the door of the Red Bank the white disc of a straw hat flashed reply: spruce figure: passed.

⑥ブルームが「通りのこちら側は死んだよう」といって列挙する、土地代理人事務所 land agents 以下はすべて通りの左にある。ブルーム氏は左側にいると考えられる。
Dead side of the street this. Dull business by day, land agents, temperance hotel, Falconer’s railway guide, civil service college, Gill’s, catholic club, the industrious blind. Why? Some reason.

⑦ブルームは、白馬がロータンダの手前の角（前方左）を曲がって来て、すれ違うのを見ている。ブルーム氏は後ろの席にいると考えられる。
White horses with white frontlet plumes came round the Rotunda corner, galloping. A tiny coffin flashed by.

⑧ブルームはカニンガムの大きな目をみる。カニンガムは目をそらす。カニンガムはブルームの反対側にいる可能性が高い。
—It is not for us to judge, Martin Cunningham said.
Mr Bloom, about to speak, closed his lips again. Martin Cunningham’s large eyes. Looking away now.

⑨角を曲がるときに、ダンフィーの角だ、と、パワーが皆に知らせる。パワーは後ろに座っている可能性が高い。
—Dunphy’s, Mr Power announced as the carriage turned right.

⑩カニンガム、パワー、サイモン、ブルームの順に降りる。乗ったのと反対側から降りているということ。カニンガムは取手をひねって膝で押して扉を開ける。この動作から前に座っているものと思われる。
The felly harshed against the curbstone: stopped. Martin Cunningham put out his arm and, wrenching back the handle, shoved the door open with his knee. He stepped out. Mr Power and Mr Dedalus followed.

以上を総合すると、進行方向にむかって、左前方に後ろ向きにサイモン、その隣にカニンガム、その向かいに前向きにパワー、その隣にブルーム氏が座っている。カニンガムとパワーの位置が反対だった。これが正解と考える。
サイモンがブルームの向かいだとすると、サイモンは左側にいるので、②のサイモンの動作 Mr Dedalus said, stretching over across がつじつまが合わないように思える。
“across” は人越しに、ではなく、馬車の窓枠越しに、ということと思う。馬車の窓は開いているのだ。
He passed an arm through the armstrap and looked seriously from the open carriagewindow at the lowered blinds of the avenue.

③のつじつまは合わない。しかしいちばん整合的なのは上の配置だと思う。
さてそうすると、今回の箇所、カニンガムがパワーを “nudge” する、というのはどういう意味か。nudgeは、肘でつつくという意味だが、カニンガムとパワーは並んでいないので肘でつつけない。困ったな。
しかし、辞書を見るとこうあった。
nudge To touch gently, as with the elbow; give a hint or signal to by a covert touch with the hand, elbow, or foot. （Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia）
なるほど、足でつつくのも nudge なのか。カニンガムは向かい合わせのパワーを足でつついたのだ。
