第12章。酒場バーニーキアナンで、ブルーム氏と「市民」というあだ名のナショナリスト、ジョー・ハインズらの酔客が会話している。
ブルーム氏の妻のモリーが、興行師のブレゼス・ボイランと演奏旅行に行く予定と聞いて、この章の語り手が、これは不倫旅行と悟ったところ。
“begob”はアイルランドの感嘆詞で “by God” が転じたものという。
“says I to myself says I” は、Gifford の注釈によると、ギルバート＆サリヴァンの喜歌劇『イオランテ』（Iolanthe,1882年）のなかの歌曲 "When I went to the bar " のフレーズとのこと。⇒ ♪

I'll work on a new and original plan,
(Said I to myself — said I),
I'll never assume that a rogue or a thief
Is a gentleman worthy implicit belief,

しかし、調べると、Harry Von Tilzer 作曲、Ed Moran 作曲のアイルランド歌曲でまさに “Says I To Myself, Says I” というのもあった。1917年の出版なので小説の時代1904年には合わないのだが。⇒ ♪
“the milk in the cocoanut” は、辞書をみると、「事の核心」とのこと。ココナッツの実にミルクをどうやっていれたのか謎だから。
“absence of hair on the animal’s chest” はなんのことかよくわからない。ブルーム氏かボイランに胸毛がないといっているのか。柳瀬尚紀さんが、この語り手は「犬」だと論じている（岩波新書『ジェイムズ・ジョイスの謎を解く』、1996年）。人のことをアニマルといって毛にこだわることが、犬説の根拠のひとつとなっている。
“the tootle on the flute” は、パーシー・フレンチ作曲の歌曲 “Phil The Fluter’s Ball”の一節。⇒ ♪
